Happy Earth Day!

Here is the cover illo I did for a “Going Green” tabloid the Union-Tribune put out in time for Earth Day. I must have done over 10 different sketches for this, which is more than I normally do. Sometimes the more I work on the composition, the better the end result. Then again, if I am lucky and get divine inspiration, occasionally my first sketch is the winner. Speaking of the divine – let’s take care of our earth today and do something like skip the plastic bag when you are only buying a few easy-to-carry items. Or how about bringing your own cup to the coffee shop today. It all adds up. Have a good day!

Mendenhall's Make-Ready

The Mendenhall clan were visiting from Florida and I put some of them to work. Actually, I made them print their own personalized stationery. Here is the make-ready process from cutting the paper - good job Samantha, mixing the ink, putting the plates onto the base and locking the chase into the press - good job Felicia

Mendenhall's Print & Package

Here is the actual printing - this is Samantha's stationery. She picked a soft pink and a cute bird for her image. We did most of these runs without the engine for safety reasons and to give everyone a workout. We all took turns turning the wheel. Simon even took his turn at the wheel with his mom. Look at the lovely packaged note cards they took back home with them. It really was great time!

Vegas Baby!

SND (Society of Newspaper Design) is having there conference in Vegas this year. I was asked to illustrate one of the 52 designs that will make up a deck of souvenir cards for the event. I was assigned the 5 of diamonds and this is what I came up with. I threw in the sketch just for kicks. The amount of talent that will be showcased in this deck will be amazing, I'm sure. I can't wait to see all the illustrations/cards in their final glory and play a game of Russian Rummy with them!
